Misfuelled on the M6: a driver's guide
A misfuel on the M6? Do not restart the engine. If you are in a live lane, get clear and call 999 first — otherwise a technician drains it where it stands. Call 01293 248666.

Where a misfuel on the M6 happens
This guide covers the M6 junctions 38 to 41, Tebay to Wetheral.
| Road | M6 |
|---|---|
| Section | Junctions 38 to 41, Tebay to Wetheral |
| Junctions and landmarks | J38 Tebay, J39 Shap, J40 Penrith and the A66 and J41 Wetheral and the B5305 |
| Fuel stops | Tebay Services at J38 on both carriageways, and the J40 cluster at Penrith |
Why the M6 produces misfuel calls
Junction 40 is the gateway where Lake District traffic leaves the motorway, and almost everyone who has driven up from the south fills either at Tebay or at Penrith. That makes this a short stretch with an outsized share of first-fill-of-the-journey mistakes, most of them in hire cars and campervans.
Penrith calls are dominated by people at the end of a long motorway run: two hours from the last stop, an unfamiliar forecourt, a moving queue, and often a hire car or a campervan collected that week.
If it happens on a live carriageway
The order matters here. Safety first — out of the vehicle, behind the barrier — then the police or National Highways if a lane is blocked, and only then a drainer.
- Key out, hands off An engine that has never run on the wrong fuel is a drain and nothing more. That is the cheapest outcome available and it is still on the table right now.
- Do not move the vehicle Not into a bay, not onto the verge, not around the corner — unless it is genuinely unsafe where it is.
- Hazards on, tell someone Forecourt staff are used to this and are rarely difficult about it once they know how long you will be.
- Call 01293 248666 and be specific Vehicle, wrong fuel, rough quantity, engine started yes or no. Those four things determine the price, and you hear it before we travel.
- Drain, flush, refill, prime Carried out where the vehicle stands, anywhere across CA10 and CA11.
- Back on the road About an hour for a standard job. The waste fuel is removed under a transfer note that discharges your duty of care.
If it is not safe to work where you are
There are sections of the M6 where draining at the roadside is not sensible — a live lane, a blind bend, no verge. You will be told that on the phone rather than after we arrive, and recovery to somewhere workable is the right answer then.
What the wrong fuel does on its way through
Diesel lubricates as it passes; petrol dissolves that film and acts as a solvent. Run a diesel high-pressure pump on petrol and it wears fast, shedding fine metal into the injectors behind it. None of that happens while the fuel sits in the tank. All of it starts the moment the engine turns over.
Both directions out of Penrith commit you to a long single-carriageway leg — the A66 west and the A686 over Hartside — with nowhere to stop and a slow recovery if you get it wrong.

The cost, honestly
Here is how the price actually moves. None of it depends on how many litres of the wrong fuel went in — all of it depends on whether the engine ran.
| Call-out | From just £89 misfuel callout fee |
|---|---|
| Engine never started | Usually the drain and flush only |
| Engine run briefly | Drain, flush, often a new fuel filter |
| Driven some distance | May need the high-pressure pump or injectors checking — a workshop job |
| When you hear the price | On the phone, before anyone travels |
Questions we get asked
How much does it cost in Penrith?
From just £89 misfuel callout fee. The full price for your vehicle is confirmed on the phone before a technician sets off, so there is no surprise when we arrive.
How long will I be waiting?
Arrival depends where you are across CA10 and CA11 and what is already running. You get a realistic window on the call rather than an optimistic one.
Do I need to stay with the vehicle?
Usually yes, so we can hand it back to you running. If you cannot stay, say so on the call and we will work out how to do it.
Will it have done damage?
If the engine was never started, damage is unlikely. If it ran, the risk rises with the distance driven — which is exactly why we ask.
What about a van or a hire car?
Same job. With a hire car, ring the hire company too — some policies cover a misfuel drain and it is worth knowing before you pay.
Reviews, including the bad ones
4.8 out of 5 across 2,190 Trustpilot reviews. Praise clusters on two things — speed of arrival, and technicians who do not make a driver feel stupid about a mistake anyone can make.
The complaint that comes up most is cost. It is a fair thing to raise: the call-out is From just £89 misfuel callout fee, the full price is confirmed before a technician sets off, and if the job turns out to be different you are told before further work, not after.
